Requirements for Foreign Workers in Indonesia

It should be known that there are a number of requirements that foreign workers need to fulfill according to Manpower Ministry Ministerial Decree No. 16/2015. They are:
• The worker’s level of education must be in accordance with the position being occupied.
• The worker’s competence must be demonstrable through the use of supporting certificates. The worker also must have at least five years of work experience.
• The worker must be willing to fill out a statement for transferring skills to Indonesian companion labor and to prove these skills through a report on training and education.
• The worker is required to have a tax file number (NPWP) if they have worked in the country for more than six months.
• The worker must have documented proof of insurance for insurance companies with legal status in Indonesia.
• The worker must be registered as part of National Social Security if they have worked in the country for more than six months.
It should be noted that points 1 to 3 do not apply to directorial positions, nor do they apply to members of a board of commissioners or for guidance counselors, supervisor roles or board members.
The numbers should also not be a cause for concern. The average number of foreign workers in Indonesia is approximately 70,000 per year, which is very low compared to the total number of domestic laborers in Indonesia, currently at 158 million for this year.
